Causes of Air Conditioner Failure

  • Neglecting annual maintenance. Annual maintenance is essential to your air conditioner’s performance. A licensed technician can identify potential problems before they happen. During your annual maintenance you should have your air conditioning coils cleaned and your system inspected. Neglecting to maintain your system may also void your manufacturer’s warranty.
  • Frozen coil. Dirty air filters or blocked ductwork can cause air flow problems in your system causing a frozen coil. Regularly cleaning or replacing your air filter and keeping your ductwork clean are two good rules to follow to prevent a frozen coil.
  • Refrigerant leak. Refrigerant is harmful to the environment, any leak should be repaired and recharged by a licensed technician. If your refrigerant is not at the proper level your air conditioner may not operate correctly.
  • Damaged compressor, fan blades, electrical connections or contacts. When an air conditioner compressor fails, it’s often due to an underlying issue that is causing stress on the system, such as dirty coils, low refrigerant, electrical problems etc. Annual maintenance often catches worn and damaged parts before you need emergency repairs.
  • Faulty circuit breaker or fuse. One of the first things that you should check when your air conditioner fails is your circuit breaker or fuse. Wait for 15 minutes to let your air conditioner cool down, then replace the fuse or reset the breaker. If neither of those solutions solve the problem you may have tripped a high-pressure limit switch, we suggest giving a licensed technician a call in this case.
  • Faulty thermostat. If your thermostat isn’t working right, your air conditioner may continuously cycle on and off or fail to work at all. In that case it might be time to shop for a new thermostat.
